Women and Clothes

For most women, the choice between sex and a new wardrobe is simple — they go for the clothes.

Women on average say they would be willing to give up sex for 15 months for a closet full of new apparel, with 2 percent ready to abstain from sex for three years in exchange for new duds, according to a new survey of about 1,000 women in 10 U.S. cities.

Sixty-one percent of women polled said it would be worse to lose their favorite article of clothing than give up sex for a month.

“Some people say clothes make the man, but the right clothes can even replace him,” fashion designer, stylist and TV personality Carson Kressley from the reality TV show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” said in a statement accompanying the poll.

The study also suggested that clothes often wear better than relationships.

The average woman between 18 and 54 years of age has hung on to her favorite article of clothing for 12 and a half years, a year longer than she’s held on to her longest relationship.

Almost three-quarters of respondents, or 70 percent, also said they believed in love at first sight when it came to finding the perfect article of clothing, while only 54 percent of women were as confident in spotting the right man.

Nearly half of the women, or 48 percent, taking part in the survey by consumer products giant Unilever said their favorite article of clothing was more reliable than their man in giving them confidence and making them feel sexy.

Is it true? (Reuters)

This is serios man. Give it up for 3 years? I know for sure that i cannot be a woman. Wow! The way women think completely amazes me.

This is quite generic. I know a few women who don’t.

  2. Jaycee says:

    Yes, its true…on average…

Lolll @ this statement: “The average woman between 18 and 54 years of age has hung on to her favorite article of clothing for 12 and a half years, a year longer than she’s held on to her longest relationship.” This one actually is true…ladies don’t give up their clothes easily…

Hmmm. Would that be a reason for possessing their favorite teddy bears even into their 40s?

  3. Keshi says:

I totally agree with every woman who took part in this survey :):)

    Keshi.

Et tu, Keshi? You don’t come off as a clothes person to me but then this isn’t teh first time I’ve been wrong ;).

  4. naijababe says:

yes o , women love them some clothes, thanks for visiting my blog!

Hmmm. I seem to have set off another survey here. Lol…

  5. Buki says:

Not all women think that way oh!!!

Examples? I’d love to meet some… I can’t stand lipstick and lingerie talk

  6. temmy tayo says:

    I love clothes.
    I adore shoes.
Well, I will love to have a new wardrobe!

Perhaps I should send you some ‘furos’?

  7. mari says:

    Simple answer:

    YES!

    Lol. You too?

  8. Vickii says:

Clothes don’t change, what you buy is what you’ll always have, if you take care of them they’ll make sure you always look good, they don’t forget your birthday or come home drunk, they don’t answer back or spend all their free time with their friends … when you look at it that way, it’s no surprise our relationships with our favourite clothes last longer than our relationships with guys!

Chai! I’m tempted to quote the joke about why men prefer beer to women. That said, there’re a lot of swell guys…

  9. Princess says:

Given the option I would definitely pick the clothes as opposed to the relationship!!

Don’t tell me? This is getting interesting…

  10. chainreader says:

    Yep!

At least it seems so. My clothes last on the average 5 times longer all the time i’ve spent in relationships! Wonder what that says about me? Maybe that i have long lasting clothes?

As much as 5 times? And you wanted to date me? 🙁

  11. chainreader says:

ooooh, i meant to say “………longer than”. why can’t we edit stuff after posting? grrrr. azuka, am sure you can rig something up to remedy that.

Security reasons ;-). If you let me know by email I can edit your comment though…

  12. Calabar Gal says:

A whole new wardrobe of clothes? To tell U the truth even I would go for it if it was designer clothing. (smile)

    I’m learning. When I go a-wooing I think I’ll focus on clothes…

  13. What women really need is a single blouse or skirt that can assume any shape, size or colour.

That would put an end to all those maddening shopping trips – not to mention the wardrobe space saved.

But somehow, I suspect I’m being all too rational about this, and some woman is going to come along and tell me that there is a sublime joy in rummaging through that massive collection of clothes…

Heh heh. Every woman wants to be unique. Have you ever watched when two couples meet? The men shake hands and the women check out each other’s clothes. Worst case scenario: they’re dressed similarly.

That said, I don’t think everyone is that creative. Most women would still have to take the clothes to a professional ‘shape-shifter’ to modify the clothes to suit the occasion which turns out more expensive in the long run.

  14. Diamond says:

it’s not true o… they actually were talking about this on the radio yesterday…. abeg clothes cannot replace a man or sex
which material is it that hits the spot? which material are the clothes made of that can cuddle you….make you feel cherished…and let me tell you when you find a man…i mean YOUR man…he will make you feel as fine/confident/sexy as ever….

you have to wonder which women those are that they polled
Me? im not one of them

At last, a real woman! Not that the other respondents are fake 😛

  15. Jem says:

i guess its kinda true … what can I say? I love shopping. Yay !!!

That’s true. Perhaps you should explore clothes and shopping with respect to relationships on Romantic Affairs 😉

  16. Kemi says:

I hear sex tails off after you get married and have children. I am married and have a daughter, do I qualify for a new wardrobe, please?

Err, well, if you pay for it…

  17. taureanminx says:

3 years is a bit far fetched lol but for I’ll consider it for less time

Like how long? Two months? 😉

  18. Daddy's Girl says:

I’m with TMinx – not for 3 long years o. The clothes would start to be very cold comfort after a while.

What a relief! I’m glad there’re still great women out there…

  19. idemili says:

Erm…I’m not really sure about this. I love good clothes as much as the next woman and would consider shopping for long periods of time if I wasn’t alone [it gets pretty tiring after a while and I get the dull ache st the base of my spine]. I would give up having a relationship ever if I thought it was detrimental and useless, but ladies com’on now. Give up a nice hunka brown lovin’ for clothes? Even designer apparel? Hell no. We’re talking nice broad shoulders, sensuous lips, hard biceps, firm gluts…maybe dimples versus shape flattering, well tailored, bum hugging, hips skimming…

You know what? I just watched the Oscars. It seems possible.

Lol. I was just as amazed at some of the answers. Well, anything that floats their boats…
