Near Disaster

My friend Samuel took me to Walmart last night. On a whim I decided to pick some sausage-and-pepperoni pizza — I think I’ve begun to like pizza.

I followed the instructions on the back of the box — put the pizza in an oven and bake for 18 minutes. Unfortunately, my ‘oven’ was my microwave :).

I went over to my desk and began to work on a client’s website. Suddenly the fire alarm rang and I showered curses on the creature who’d set it off — or the RA who’d decided we needed a fire drill.

As I opened my door and prepared to run out, I discovered the smoke was coming from yours truly’s microwave. I pulled out all the plugs from the wall and hurried off to own up to an RA. Loretta and Brandon were understanding and no, I don’t have to write a report.

Well, I retrieved the blackened mass from the microwave and dumped it in the trash can, deciding to do away with the rest of the pizza, but come on — we’re talking about wasting $6.

I decided to bake some more, but in two minute increments. I got the pizza well cooked, and it sure went down well.

Thanks for dropping by. Since I left home I’ve been doing less and less cooking — my city’s so tiny we don’t even have an African shop and I don’t have a car to drive all the way to Charleston. As for cooking ‘oyibo’ food, the sight of those cheese-covered foods alone makes me puke :(.

    Overwhelmed
Surprise, surprise — look who’s here. I’m honored [and humbled]. Thanks for dropping by ;).

LOL!! You owned up!! That was good!!
An incident like that happened to me once when I was in the hostel. Put some burgers in the oven and turned up the heat. Went back to to my room. Fire Alarm rang some 5minutes later and I ran to the kitchen to see what was amiss. Alas the supervisor was already there and ordered an evacuation of the whole building!!! I was so ashamed but we were allowed back after about 7minutes when the whole situation had been assessed!! Was more careful when making food in the communal kitchen after that!!

Please please tell me you’re joking and you actually do know the difference between a microwave and an oven! I have to say, I’m full of admiration for you for confessing to this! LOL you live and you learn right? And you made me laugh and that can’t be a bad thing!

  8. Honestly, 1982, the directions were at best vague. Since microwaves are sometimes called ‘microwave ovens’ I figured I could get away with it.

  9. Belle says:

    HAHHAHAHA… that was funny!
    1) i know walmart sells food… but it still feels weird to me o!
    2) Oven… Microwave… Oven… Microwave!
    3) At least they didn’t make you evacuate the building eh?

    LOL

    Have a good one!

  10. Buki says:

LOL!!! 18 minutes??? Thank God you didn’t leave the building! At least you can say you learned something new!

I still can’t get over how young you are… you are doing so well for yourself, WELL DONE!

    Take care.
